A Northern Around the Pole Boat People
Well to avoid some never ending stuff I will start a new thread.
I posted this over at Ish’s site but I thought it may be of interest here.
It is something I came across while investigating the Norse across the North Atlantic thing.
This guy is very much into linguistics and not DNA.
But he has some good ideas of how and why the language of the Finns and the Hungarians, among others around the world, is related.
This is the home page.
Go to the associated ones.
It is a good read.

Afaik the Est language, as spoken in Estonia, is also related to Finnish and Hungarian and in the same Indo-European language group.kbs2244 wrote:how and why the language of the Finns and the Hungarians, among others around the world, is related.

Yeah, he talks about that.
He tracks the language similarities across Siberia to the NA Artic coast in the Inuit and then down both Pacific coasts to the US / Canada border area and to Japan.
Also south through Asia along river routes.
A big part of his argument is that they stuck to the water and marsh.
By avoiding settling on the high ground they avoided conflict with the farming cultures in the areas they passed through.
Some shifted from a water animal hunting culture to a traveling trader culture, but they stayed boat people.
He gets a little thin when he talks about physical similarities and adaptation to the climate.
But still it is an interesting read.
I suggest it.

That would limit that scenario of coastal migrations to the holocene. When men had agriculture. I have a problem with that: Australopithecine habitation has been well established at Plettenberg Bay and Mossel Bay in South Africa along with mountains of evidence, namely empty shells, that their staple was shellfish and other sea fruit. So coastal living - life at the waterline, and living off the sea - commenced MILLIONS of years ago. Not just thousands.kbs2244 wrote:YBy avoiding settling on the high ground they avoided conflict with the farming cultures in the areas they passed through.

And who lives at the coast without boats?
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

Those who haven't invented them yet, but eventually will. Until that time, they wade. Everyday. Along the waterline. Gathering proteines. To Java and beyond.Minimalist wrote:And who lives at the coast without boats? So coastal living - life at the waterline, and living off the sea - commenced MILLIONS of years ago. Not just thousands.

Then they say to themselves "BOATS!!!!"

Of course! There was nobody else to say it to! They probably said something more along the lines of "WTF" and called Archimedes, who wouldn't be home for another million years, so they took an OU correspondence course.Minimalist wrote:That lasts until the first log is observed floating by.

Surf's Up!
I still think the first water craft was like a surf board on steroids. Shaped with fire, and abrasives rocks.
Surfers never get credit for anyting!

How about credit for bad music? (Beach Boys et al.)
(Just kidding)
Surfers that I know are very Zen people.

Now we return you to the regular topic!

Exxcuuuse Me!
Only one of the beach boys ever actualy surfed, and poorly according to reports from the beach.
Dick Dale is the King of the Surf Guitar. He made music that "sound like surfing" Maybe you never heard of him, but I bet you know his music better than you think. Check out Miseralou, and see if it does not sound familar.

They would have to do something first, wouldn't they?Barracuda wrote:Surfers never get credit for anyting!
And I understand that would be unnatural for surf dudes and dudettes.
Re: A Northern Around the Pole Boat People

Re: A Northern Around the Pole Boat People
i saw Dick play about 10 years ago. He's one of the baddest guitar players most people never heard of....but they're surely heard his music, or music he inspired. That was one of my favorite all time show...but something else that night added to that memory hehe.Barracuda wrote:Exxcuuuse Me!
