Re: Oh for Christs Sake!
Yeah. As with so much else, the Romans adapted and perfected the Greek designs for various classes of ballista. In the 3d century BC, that process had not begun yet and Roman siege doctrine was not highly developed. Gotta disagree with you there, Min. The Romans had been absorbing and adapting gree...

Why Temperature and Air Pressure Are Important to Survey
As I read some total station reference guides this morning, I wondered why it was so important to set the current temperature and air pressure when surveying. For anyone who, like me, hasn't been properly trained in professional surveying this is probably a good question to see answered. Here's an e...

Re: 8,000-ish BC Atlatl Dart Found in Yellowstone.
I guess I should start keeping my head down a bit more on some of these mountain ascents I've been making lately. Can't wait to see what we dig up at the base of Mt. Uncompahgre. I'll make sure to keep my eyes open on the way to the summit on the final day. Might find a matching set. Archaeo lawn da...

It was fascinating to hear that Chaco went through building cycles based on tree ring corellations with an 11 year solar cycle (again, heard about this over a decade ago, might have changed since then). Fascinating, indeed. Here's a paper from April of last year to catch us up: http://escholarship....

BP Fined for False Production Reporting
http://www.denverpost.com/ci_15410244 Mmmm, more evil BP news. Looks like they were trying to screw the Southern Ute this time around. Having personally compiled natural gas royalty reports, it ain't that hard once the formulas are written. You take the ownership report and resulting interest formu...

Re: Blood Degrees Were Unknown to Native Americans
That's exactly right. At some point in the 1830s, an ancestor of mine named Nancy Bear, who was likely 1/2 or 1/4, decided to opt for nothing. As such, 1/8 Isleta Pueblo is the only native ancestry I can prove.kbs2244 wrote:So, to the Cherokee, it was an all or nothing type thing?

You need to spend some time with a better book - may I suggest "Man and Impact in the Americas"? It handles questions like "How did those two human populations differentiate?" Bet you "First Americans..." did not handle that one. It also covers archaeo astronomy, with ...

Re: Noah's shoe found
The shoe was stuffed with grass, which scientists believe was meant to work as a shoe tree for holding the shape. It appeared to have been carefully placed in the clay-lined pit where it was found. I wonder how much grass was in there. Might've just been insulation to keep out the cold. How does on...

Thanks to Bush we have plenty of dung heaps. I'll have to look and see if there are any roses growing. I would like to assure you that there are a few roses growing out there. Some of us youngsters had the distinct advantage of being born in places where modernism was a bit slower to take hold, tow...

http://revisedhistory.org/manifest-mission.htm Man, I love realizing that my personal viewpoints on some things are closer to the nutjobs than I had previously thought. Like these folks, I despise the grip of nationalism and the effects it can have on academia and our understanding of culture. I've...

This guy ain't surprising to anyone that's been to the populated areas of the 6th district. If you lived in Waxahatchie or Corsicana, you'd sell out too. "The top campaign contribution to Barton in 2007-2008 was $23,650 from employees of Nucor Corp. Joe Barton’s net worth was between $32,004 an...

Sure looks like it. I devoured Adovasio's First Americans in a day. If the foreword and first ten pages of Mr. Hardaker's work are an indication, this will be much the same but with less "C. Vance Haynes drove me to drink".Minimalist wrote:Well worth your time, Johnny.
