Re: Dendrochoronology Dates Norse in Canada to 1021

My first experience with that was at the 1964 World's Fair and a replica of Columbus' Santa Maria. As I went to go down a stairway to the lower deck I found that my heel barely fit on the step. A worker, in 15th century sailor's garb, saw the look on my face and said "people were a lot smaller ...

Re: Dendrochoronology Dates Norse in Canada to 1021

Maybe. Of course the 51st parallel runs across what is virtually the border of the US/Canada and from this photo of Montana it looks like prairie out there, too. L'Anse aux Meadows is somewhat north of the 51st parallel but, you know, close enough for government work. https://3gz8cg829c.execute-api....

Re: Dendrochoronology Dates Norse in Canada to 1021

I don't think that is what they are saying. The OG29 signal stands out like a sore thumb in the tree rings which helps to identify the precise pattern and hence the number of years. The only thing that bothers me is if you look at a photo of the area of L'Anse aux Meadows it is not forested. How far...

Re: Death Knell for Clovis Firsters?

We missed that when we were in Ephesus in 2007.... or perhaps it had not been built yet?

Re: The Father of Lies, LIED???

He tells you exactly what he personally observed & what he was told by others.

And that's fine, except what he personally observed was in the 5th century BC and his comments about the pyramids were 2,000 years after they were built. The locals always have good yarns for the tourists!

Re: The Father of Lies, LIED???

In "The Histories," Herodotus states that the Carthaginians used mercenaries when they attacked Himera, but neither he nor Diodorus Siculus mention foreign mercenaries on the Greek side. There might be a reason for this: Greek pride. Carthage was not Rome. They habitually used mercenary t...

Re: Death Knell for Clovis Firsters?

There are so many things wrong with that Shroud bullshit. My favorite is "jesus" being only a half inch thick!.

Like Gumby.

Re: Death Knell for Clovis Firsters?

I'm not sure. I know the Shroud of Turin nuts tried to claim that when separate labs came back with a 12th century date for that thing. Somehow, they don't seem to grasp that in order to get a C14 date you have to incinerate the sample in the first place.

Its grasping at straws.

Re: Death Knell for Clovis Firsters?

Yes but there are hard sciences and soft sciences and sadly archaeology is "soft." There is always room for interpretation of finds. That said, it explains why the losing side does not like it when they are tripped up by C14 dating. They have refined that now to a point where an olive pit,...

Re: Death Knell for Clovis Firsters?

Clovis-First has been on life-support for quite a while. This may be the coup d'grace. Refinements in C14 testing have been proven correct on pollen samples in the Levant. No reason to think that it is any different on this side of the pond. Of course, the Adam and Eve and 6,000 year-old earth crowd...

Re: Acropolis Renovations

So now we're being held accountable for a biological function?
That is one of the main points of the Garden of Eden myth. Women fucked up so they have to be punished. Easy to write after the fact!

But most mythology has that kind of etiological basis on one level or another.

Re: Acropolis Renovations

That was quite a surprise, Simon. I wasn't the only one of our group who slipped up there. One woman went down and caught herself on her knees and hands. She's lucky she didn't break anything. I did chuckle at the line which said that they planned to reconstruct a "Roman marble staircase."...

Re: Acropolis Renovations

Religion gets a lot of credit for shit it never did, Circ. Instead, it incorporated the existing culture and gave it the imprimatur of whatever god they are pushing to say it just fine with him. Religitards did not become bullshitters only in modern times! If you check out the history of dowries or ...
