Those are natural stains in the polished stones. I really don't understand all the chemistry of it. There are so many different iron compounds. My impression is that it takes iron rich water leaching through another mineral over a long time to stain it. http://www.waterpharmacy.com/images/ebay/irons...

Sorry, Beagle! My bad for not crediting you with posting those sat photos. I couldn't determine the source...were they on the web, or did you scan them from a printed source? I would like to see more, perhaps an enlargement. I tried to find it on te web without success, although I did find some inte...

Min, that's a great comparison photo of the old and new desert area.
Makes me think that beneath all that sand, down where the old surface is,
is a lot of archeological information. Get out those shovels.!

Charlie, That last gigantic "axe" of yours....must have been for smashing heads! The acheulean one you posted is more like what i saw. You probably already know about all the following, but you keep saying that early man was engaged in "ochre staining."...so here's some thoughts....

Seems to me that the chemical composition of the trapped gases would have been changed by the heat and electrical energy of the lightning.

http://www.world-mysteries.com/sar_8pbck2.jpg From the "fuente" THis looks like random filling in of rectangles to me, not any kind of writing. There's no pattern of repetition. No consistency. In fact it looks like beginner's artwork. As for the "cuneiform" passages....I think ...

A few weeks ago I went to the anthropological museum at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. There was a display comparing natural rocks to American Indian stone tools. One of the tools was the largest "axe" I have ever seen. It was about a foot long and a nice symmetrical shape, bifac...

This recent announcement may be as close to definitive as we are likely to get in our lifetimes. On NPR I heard that the findings are supposed to be "90 %" certain. I also heard that the Chinese are acknowledging it, due to a one- degree- celsius rise in temperature per decade over the las...

I'm pretty skeptical of these. Mainly because they have generally been disentangled from lots of scribbled lines. You can see almost anything in the scribbles. But, hey, if they're real.... They would not just be the oldest...they would be virtually unique in tribal societies even until the ...

Maybe it would be useful to point out that whales come in different sizes. Saw a movie about Eskimos hunting whales in which the hunter jumped on the whale and stabbed....'twas fiction, but seemed to be grounded in anthropological research. also, for what it's worth, steel gigs (tridents) are used t...

I have a suggestion for the bone, Charlie.
Or at least a comparison...a large turtle.
The upper carapace is an extension of the spinal column (like ribs) and the spinal cord runs along the upper edge of the shell.
However, it looks too flat for a turtle....??
