Draconid Meteor Shower

Don't forget to watch the Draconid Meteor Shower on the 8th & 9th of this month. This year there will be some competition from the full Hunter's Moon. It's supposed to make it harder to observe the meteor shower because of the brightness of the moon at this time. If you live in an area that obs...

Re: Tomb of Ramesses II's Treasurer Discovered....

His mummy was probably sold sometime between 18th & 19th centuries to be used by quack medicine practitioners. It never ceases to amaze me what people are willing to put into their bodies in the name of better health or a better erection... (mostly erections, as witnessed by the numbers of rhin...

Just for giggles

This is a pretty cool interactive global map of the earth at different periods over the last 700 million years. You can plug in your address or city or state, then choose the time period you want to see. For example, my general area was an inland sea for roughly 200 million years. That would explai...

Re: Scholars Claim to Decipher Elamite Script

I find it fascinating that someone, someday, will be able to make the intuitive leap that results in the decipherment of yet another lost language. The only down side to this is that what they decipher will be mind numbingly boring administrative documents or some king's egotistical claims of great...

Re: Clovis First Takes Another Hit

Okay. I think I figured it out... If I access a YouTube channel through a browser, rather than the app, I can copy the link from the browser. Ancient pre-Clovis sites in New Mexico: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=okczJHs4Ndg https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aCr5Ukx0V7w Bonus video, just for fun: :mrgre...

Re: Clovis First Takes Another Hit

I wish I knew how to post a YouTube link... Anywho, there is a short video about the 37kya mammoth butchery site in New Mexico. The channel is called History With Kayleigh. She is Dutch & speaks nearly flawless English. She posts a lot of videos about ancient history, anthropology & paleont...

Re: Clovis First Takes Another Hit

Reasonable in a lot of cases. Not so sure it applies to New Mexico. It is not exactly known for its rivers. Even the greatest deserts in the world had humid phases. Look at what they call The Green Sahara. I wouldn't be premature & say that our desert southwest won't have signs of human occupat...

Re: Clovis First Takes Another Hit

The real question is "what kind of early humans?" And, if they got to New Mexico by 37,000ybp how long had they been in NA before that. Two valid questions. Questions that I've wondered about. We've been told for the last century that the Clovis culture came first. We've been told that th...

Re: Clovis First Takes Another Hit

It just keeps becoming more incontrovertable. Real science vs rote science. I wonder if Clovis firsters will try to dispute this find. It's not a new discovery & the results weren't rushed to publication. That kinda makes it hard to claim it's premature.

Re: Interesting Pissing Contest Over "The Curse!"

That's pretty much S.O.P. for this field. They're always contentious & back stabbing. I don't expect it to change in my lifetime. I imagine that once the object goes open access the fur will really fly. It's not entertaining anymore. I feel like sending them to time out in various corners &...

Atepuerca seems to be a hominin hotspot. There's probably a lot more to come from that area. I can't wait to see what pops up next.

Re: Tel Gezer Essentially Unscathed After Wildfire

Stone doesn't burn, per se, but it can be heavily damaged or even destroyed depending upon the intensity & duration of the fire. Fire has long been used to break up boulders in agricultural fields, probably for millenia. Our early ancestors learned that they could change the properties of certa...
