Re: Okay, So It Isn't Exactly a Munich beer Hall...

My eldest went on a tour of Soweto and was offered the chance to drink at a Shebeen (supposedly illegal beer stube - so illegal there were tourist tours of it). The beverage of choice was "kaffirbeer", allegedly the oldest type of beer in the world and the one allegedly drunk in Egypt etc....

Re: Pompeii Continues To Reveal Its Treasures

This is certainly a great and interesting discovery. The only fly in the ointment is the designation. Surely four wheels is a cart or coach not a chariot. But clearly there is much still to be found at Pompeii, if it is not robbed out first. There is still the great mystery of why a precious chunky ...

The Dig

Well worth a viewing on Netflix. Examines the dig at Sutton Hoo. Again profiling the British class obsession. Not totally accurate in its details, apparently Mrs Pretty (a convinced spiritualist) authorised the Dig when one of her regular house guests reported seeing Anglo Saxon ghosts processing ar...

Re: Squatters in Caral?

Typical comfortable westerner response! Bullets don't grow on trees FYI, and then there are the firearms, gun oil etc. It all adds up.#

Re: Squatters in Caral?

Bury them five metres underground? Surprisingly thorough. The cause here seems clear enough as does the solution. Give the people land elsewhere or pay them for what they have lost. They are not squatting in pursuit of some mystical/political ideology, they are trying to provide for their families. ...

Re: I Don't Know About This One

Must have had a lot of time on their hands. I believe they called Egypt "the black land". On a wider note it is of course interesting to consider how ancient entities saw themselves. We all think defining a country is fairly easy, but in the ancient world it was a lot more fluid bit more l...

Re: Squatters in Caral?

Sounds accurate. Isn't it true in Mexico (Guatemala) that some archaeologists have to have heavily armed bodyguards? On a recent programme on military archaeology in Poland the archaeologists had barely broken ground when a group of suspicious vehicles suddenly appeared.

Re: I Don't Know About This One

Seems suspiciously definitive. "So far" might be a useful corollary. And why do people who write about the ME do so in weird language - "the land of Canaan", just Canaan. Archaeologists from the land of Britain, came to the land of Egypt along with others from the land of France,...

Re: Food's Probably Cold By Now!

Oh dear Mr Moron tries again. This is going to be fun. Can I humbly suggest that if you haven't actually heard of one of the world's leading Classicists (she has extensively lectured in Yankeeland and her books are widely available), that you pull your stupid head in and concentrate on your favouri...

Re: Food's Probably Cold By Now!

Good for Mr dirt-mouth, posting without referring to human shixxx. Therapy must be working! I stand corrected, but the fact remains that the total amount of kitchen material found at Pompeii is not great and the huge vessels in the counters show little signs of fire. Presumably they weren't heated....

Re: Food's Probably Cold By Now!

A ccording to Mary Beard other taverns like this show no signs of fire, meaning the food was either sold cold or they contained ingredients not actual meals, though this discovery seems to mitigate against this. Of course no kitchens have been found at Pompeii and very few (if any) cooking implement...

Re: Women's mass grave sheds light on female victims of Spanish Civil War

You can read accounts in Paul Preston's "The Spanish Holocaust". The fascists passed a law that if a family member escaped the death squads then other members of the family could be murdered. Apparently one "commander" had his pregnant captives run up and down stairs until they a...

Women's mass grave sheds light on female victims of Spanish Civil War

About times the crimes of the psycho Franco were exposed. At least they were shot - a small mercy, he wasn't fond of women.

Oh and just to make it crystal clear because with you one has to I stand by my comments. Including the one "Countries have their customs" What part of that is difficult for you? or are you saying Hasidim of the Mea Sharim don't have any customs? I have to say what their precise attitude t...
