Quick answer is the Midrash is the "Jewish companion bible". It is the oral law and traditions that interpret the deeper meaning of the torah. It is everything from HOW the Jews were to keep the sabbath and HOW the Jews are to keep Kosher to the deeper (can you say Mystery interpretations)...
