Re: A Maya Diaspora

I like to remind 'experts' that in nearly every case their discipline was founded by an ameteur.

Re: Trans-oceanic contacts

It was the Germanic tribes, ie northern Europe, that I was thinking about.

Re: Trans-oceanic contacts

Exactly, the Cretans and parts of India acheived the same thing, but it seems to me that Europe's problems started when they began to spread away from river banks. Whilst habitation was limited to a narrow strip on each side of the river no major problems arose, as they moved away from the rivers we...

Re: Trans-oceanic contacts

The reason I asked was on the subject of sanitation, it appears that those places that weren't constructed on river banks seem to have used a supply of running water, from surrounding hills for example, and developed sanitation much earlier than those placed on rivers.

Re: Trans-oceanic contacts

A question Cogs. Were south American cities located on rivers as were the European ones?

Re: Trans-oceanic contacts

The assumed major killer has always been promulgated as being Smallpox but as I pointed out earlier the time taken to cross the Atlantic from mainland Europe is far greater than the time taken to infect the entire crew of the early vessels. Thus the most likely mode of transmissions would have been ...

Re: Trans-oceanic contacts

Absolutely Cogs, an automatic quarantine period. It wasn't till air liners took over that we really faced the possibilty of the rapid spread of diseases.

Re: Trans-oceanic contacts

Pre Columbus there is evidence that old world met new on a number occasions, the Vikings, possible the Welsh and/or Irish and certainly the Portuguese. With such a short incubation period I have doubts that anyone boarding a trans atlantic ship would have had visible symtoms, thus he could only have...

Re: Trans-oceanic contacts

For some odd reason the promulgators of that idea always seem to ignore the incubation period of Small Pox, one to two weeks. What chance a Spanish ship carrying that across the Atlantic?

Christmas joy!

Chap buys a parrot as a Christmas present for his girl friend but has to keep it in his flat as the shop closes early for the holiday. Soon after he gets it home he finds that it has a pretty extensive vocabulary, mainly obscene. He shouts at it to shut up and it simply screams and swears at him. Af...
