Re: Spammers.....

Curiously I notice that your January spamwave coincided with one on TAF and also another forum upon which I post - in fact one of them (the imaginatively named 'Dressin' who had some great deals on wedding clobber, allegedly) turned up on both boards. Currently getting two or three a week, but it wa...

Re: Egyptian Glyphs in Australia???

We had another discussion about this some time ago and, IIRC, it was agreed that it is possible, just from looking at a map of the Indian Ocean, that a ship could reach Australia. Whether the ship was Egyptian or just had Egyptians aboard her is something we'll never likely know. All that aside, it...

Re: Were Quipus used to send messages?

From what you've described, it looks to me like the collaborative system worked. Good advice on double checking sources. With my stroke damage even after multiple checks I still screw up. Not sure whether it's likely to ring bells but I once ended up with more egg on my face than I liked through as...

Re: Were Quipus used to send messages?

Er yes... look, the thing is I am actually quite familiar with FAMSI and whilst they certainly provide a useful service, they're not without problems. Was wracking my brain to recall what it was that bothered me, and found the answer at last in an email correspondence from 2007, in which I wrote: I'...

Re: Science Fiction Writers

Hmmmm. Not familiar with George R. Stewart beyond the name but will keep an eye peeled for that. Actually off to Half-Price Books shortly so may even see it today.

Re: Science Fiction Writers

Thought of starting a new thread but had some vague memory of having started this one way back in the day when we were posting from ZX Spectra and the like. Actually, Mr. Grondine mentioning Canticle for Leibowitz got me started, this being one of the reputed SF classics I've still to read (along wi...

Re: Were Quipus used to send messages?

Hi War Arrow - I think you'll really enjoy this link: http://www.famsi.org/research/pohl/index.html And particularly the readings of the Mixtec codices. Yes, there's some good stuff there for sure... and ironically some of the commentaries go into a bit more detail than those in the various printed...

Re: Were Quipus used to send messages?

Sorry... bit late but never mind. Personally I suspect the quipu may have worked roughly as well as the central Mexican painted books which could record, names, dates, places, and some of the relationship between these (as in, so-and-so conquered somewhere on such and such day) but few abstracts - ...

Re: Were Quipus used to send messages?

The strings did not have to carry messages as such, they could have simply been used as an aid to memory so that the carrier did not miss out any of the message. I suspect that would be step one, step two would be to incorporate steadily more and more info till the actual message could then be read...

Re: I'm back

Long time no see WA, yeah me and Min are still trying to keep 'em all in line. Nic to see you back, and ignore Min, congratulations! Charlie took umbrage at Rokcet Scientist, he wasn't the only one I might add, and is no longer with us but much missed. Roy. Yes - I remember the thing about the avat...

Re: I'm back

Uhhh... and seeing as I notice at least Min and Digit are still around, here I am again, at least back to the odd lurk. Now living in San Antonio, Texas as of about two months ago. Got married just last week. Still writing... Not much to add except I've been trying to turn the yard into a garden (wh...

God is not the Creator

From here . Apologies if you've all already seen this or if it's already been posted, but I thought it was pretty interesting. Professor Ellen van Wolde, a respected Old Testament scholar and author, claims the first sentence of Genesis "in the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth&quo...

Re: New species?

Frank, I suppose it's possible that the American Sasquatch and Asian Yeti stories refer to an unknown species, but I'm skeptical. "Wild man" stories are common in many cultures, e.g. European stories of various large and small creatures living in forests, under bridges, in mountains, rive...

Re: New species?

Well this is all very discouraging. I'm gonna go take a nap. :( If I've learnt anything, it's don't listen to the miserable f****** clogging up the internet who, if reading a post about someone intending to move to the US (that's just a random example pulled out of the top of my head) will dedicate...

Re: New species?

I imagine it to be maybe closely related to us, but who knows, and I wouldn't like to say whether it would rate as 'higher' or 'lower'. If there is such a thing as bigfoot or sasquatch or whatever, I hadn't really considered it in terms of intelligence I must admit, imagining something sort of half-...
