Tintagel is one of those sites where it seems something important is always being discovered.
Many will remember the excitement over the discovery of the Artognou stone in 1998. Here for the first time there seemed to be definitive proof that the name Arthur (or a derivation of it) acually existed in the fifth and sixth centuries.
And of course Tintagel is supposed to be where the legendary Arthur was born son of Uther (Eleutherius) Pendragon (head dragon).
Pure nonsense and a red rag to the nutter brigade, but it was amazing that commemorative lintels were still being made at this time. Plainly Tintagel was an important site. The fact a piece of Spanish glassware (the only piece from Dark age Britain ever found) was discovered at the same time confirms this.

The presence of scribes indicates a high status area. Itr certainly cannot be seem simply as a monastery.
But that is the wonder of Tintagel. A small port on the North Coast of Cornwall. Why did it attract such overseas interest? Tintagel ware - Roman hi status pottery and products. Why come here and not some more accessible port? In this alone, this must rank as one of the more bizzare and interesting sites of this period.
