It's a damn pity that articles such as this one need to be published... But still, it needs to be said, repeatedly, til the new age/ancient aliens morons are finally silenced... (yeah right... like that will ever happen)

It is also not true that Napoleon's gunners used it for target practice

Probably not because Napoleon had already sent a cadre of scholars to Egypt to oversee the discovery, identification & removal of any important artifacts during the French campaign in Egypt. Common soldiers would have been instructed to keep an eye out for antiquities & to report them immediately. This was fairly atypical for the time because most armies were only concerned with capturing & holding territory. The story of the discovery of the Rosetta Stone is a good example. Ole Nappy was ahead of his time as far as reverence for antiquities. (for the purpose of looting, of course) He essentially started the fad of Egyptomania worldwide.

One of the classic examples of this fashion fad was Col. Powers naming of various sites he saw in the Grand Canyon with Egyptian names.

He knew it would get him headlines.

We suffer from the side effects of those names to this day.

Napoleon was an artillerist. His gunners would not have missed.

Yes, the board is back up & running. However, it's looking weird on a smartphone... It's a "mobile friendly" version that I absolutely hate. And... there's no obvious way to change the display from the mobile version to a desktop version... I must jump through hoops just to check if there are any new posts... like clicking on each separate board just to check for new posts... I hate this new version... :x
