While Stone Age hunters are known to have been living on mainland Europe for over 1 million years, the Mediterranean islands were previously believed to be settled only 9,000 years ago, by farmers, the idea being that only modern humans -- Homo sapiens -- were sophisticated enough to build seafaring vessels.

They're not ready to concede that any hominin other than HSS was 'really' capable of ocean voyages... Note how they back pedal at the end of the article...

Notice how Neanderthals are relegated to the short bus??? So... they're only capable of building crude watercraft capable of only short distance seafaring?
I find it hard to believe that an educated adult can't accept that so called primitive humans were capable of building sophisticated watercraft capable of: a. Crossing long distances between land masses & b. Repeating that behavior often enough to transport enough persons to establish a breeding population large enough to colonize distant, isolated places. The physical evidence is abundant & (to me) impossible to deny. (Indonesia & the Philippines for example)

Bednarik convincingly demonstrated that HE crossed deep waters to settle Indonesian islands and "floating vegetation mats" were not going to do the trick!

Well... ya know... floating vegetation mats might work once... for a single large mammal... then that mammal is alone til the day it dies...
And it is a viable way for small mammals & terrestrial reptiles to colonize far flung places...
However, you can't accidentally float a viable breeding population of large bodied mammals over long distances on storm wrack or the ever so convenient mats of vegetation...
Who in the hell would believe that?

It seems like there is some sort of bias going on here. Why is it so very important to try to convince everyone that any hominins other than HSS were incapable of any sort of sophisticated behavior? And it's been passed down like gospel for generations now. What is it? Is it because other hominins look different, maybe less attractive than HSS? Us versus them???
