Balsa - 30 years of deliberated destruction of Roman remains

Balsa was an ancient Roman city in south Portugal, the actual Tavira, and one of the biggest Roman cities of Iberia.

As a consequence of turistic pressure, several terrain owners have been hiding and destroying Roman remains in order to build luxury resorts for turists.

The most serious case is happening in Quinta da Torre d’Aires where since 1978 the Balsa city Roman remains have been deliberately destroyed in an attempt to declassify the area and thus allow construction of luxury resorts.

More than 30 ha from the 42 ha of the area have already been destroyed. The city mayor doesn't seem to be very worried, unfortunately.
