Just found this. We live and learn...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_salmon

... for example I was unaware that Atlantic Salmon didn't need salt water.

Dieing after breeding seems a terribly poor tactic.

Certainly a dis-incentive to the act.

Lake Michigan has an artificial salmon population.
If memory serve me correctly they were brought in from the Pacific North West.
The State of Michigan released them (maybe just eggs?) in streams and creeks that flowed into Lake Michigan.

They live the regular salmon life cycle but go into Lake Michigan for the “big water” phase then return to their birthplace stream to lay and fertilize the eggs.

No salt water there.

"Certainly a dis-incentive to the act."

One of the funniest cartoons I have ever seen showed a bunch of salmon jumping like mad to get up a water fall.
The one turns to the other and says
"How do we know these girls will be worth it when we get there?"
