Well, some of those country boys (rednecks) did get into the long hair and smoking of things other than tobacco (like the urban hippies). So to the old timers, who only saw a real hippie on TV, they were hippies.
Guys by the name of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings got pretty famous with this look.
(And of course with a way of tying words together..)
One thing about the Internet, if you cannot spell, you cannot use it.
Still cannot belive they closed the book keepers down.
And they ddon't even fund the cops?
Do the state guys cruise around at all?
Or is it back to the 1800s and everyman is his own lawwkeeper?

Around here rednecks and hippies didn't get along at all. There was violence and shit. FYI I was/am the hippie type.

My son goes to Southern Oregon University in Ashland. Gee, I wonder if he knows they closed the libraries?

Probably not...

Actually, my ex-wife was planning director for Jackson County, so I have heard plenty of horror stories...

We were driving home from the coast one night and took the scenic back roads. When we got to downtown Gold Hill we almost had to detour because of the rednecks fighting in the street. They had their belts off hitting each other with those big ass buckles. Now that's gotta hurt.

You're right there Min. Years ago me and friend made a fighting retreat out the back door of a pub, as I climbed the wall I saw my friend take the lid off a dusbin. The first chap through the door got it straight in his face, it hardly slowed him, but I'll bet he was sorry next morning!

In Ashland the city and the schools are working together to open one of the school libraries each day M-F for the children to have a place to check out books. Plus the laid-off librarians are voluntarily holding story time for the little kids. Over 77% of the people in Ashland voted for the library levies so we are going to vote on a levy to open just our own branch. There are some kinks to work out but it is looking good.

As to the lawless county, that is just to the north of where I live. It is mostly rural and they will have no law enforcement presence at all. If they call 911 the OSP will respond if it is a life threatening emergency but other than that they are on their own. A lot of people out there are buying guns and talking vigilante justice. It is rather frightening. One of the main routes to the coast is through Cave Junction(the meth capital of Oregon). It was already pretty lawless there and now I'm not sure I would want to drive through there at night. Someone I know from that area has already had to lay on the floor of their home to dodge bullets and they weren't even involved in the altercation it was their neighbors. Anyway the police told them to call back if somebody got shot. They live at least 30 minutes from the nearest police so I think it would be all over but the shouting by the time anyone got there anyway. So my friend is trying to sell his property, that his family has owned forever, because he has small children. This whole thing just really bites the big one.

PS On topic, I still haven't found a copy of that book Frank, but I will be going into Medford today and checking out their used book stores.

Frightening it may well be Star, but over here I'm not allowed to defend myself with a weapon in case I hurt someone.
My son, 6ft 2in was attacked by a man with a club when my home was invaded, the man was same height as my son and 100lbs heavier
My son had with him his cell phone, a handkercheif and a pocket knife.
Prosecuting council made it clear the the injury he inflicted with his knife was just a graze. Verdict? Guilty of actual bodily harm.
Even the local cops were disgusted.
