Mountain Men Had Cats?

Post by gunny »

Dogs yes. this painting of 1845 by George Caleb Bingham titled Fur Traders Descending The Missouri clearly shows a cat in the bow of the canoe. The caption says it is a bear cub, but unless the artist is from New Jersey, looks like a cat to me.

Link, gunny?

Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

Note that it really is an artist's depiction-the creator had NFI what a fur trader's canoe looked like/how large it needed to be to carry supplies/maneuver on a river as large as the Missouri.

It's 100% feline though of that there is no doubt.

Yep, that's a cat.

The opportunity for raw humor presents itself, but I'm a sensitive person. :D

They catch and eat mice that would otherwise eat provisions.
That was a reason they were aboard most seagoing ships of the day also.
