I was using a satellite imaging website called "terraserver" in about 2000. Google makes it easier. I have found things from a satellite photo in my area which I later invrstigated on the ground. It is a very useful tool. I think I saw the thing about the rivers in the sahara or something and searched for a website to work with. There are others. Google has the most recent images. On terrasever I could get a closer view. i saw my house and could tell which car was parked in my driveway.
