Note that this team sets the "original" bird at 50 million years ago - it was more likely 65.5 or so.
Thus the correction is most likely a factor of 65.5/50.
They estimate genetic mutation based on radiation flow, so this correction may be applicable to hominid evolution estimates.
I picture "the" bird survival as having been in a north facing rock cleft rookery on a cliff wall in some far northern area.
