Of course.
And not just in the South west.
But all the first examiners were living in the day of the “Noble Savage” fad.

Inter tribal fighting, let alone cannibalism, would just not be tolerated by the genteel sponsors of the time.
And those sanitized reports became the basis for the next 100 years of study.
