The Old World is a reference to those parts of Earth known to Europeans before the voyages of Christopher Columbus; it includes Europe, Asia and Africa.

Have Scholars Finally Deciphered a Mysterious Ancient Script?

Linear Elamite, a writing system used in what is now Iran, may reveal the secrets of a little-known kingdom bordering Sumer
If the findings are correct—and the claim is hotly debated by the researchers’ peers—then they could shed welcome light on a little-known society that flourished between ancient Mesopotamia and the Indus River Valley at the dawn of civilization. Recently published in the journal Zeitschrift für Assyriologie und vorderasiatische Archäologie, the analysis could also rewrite the evolution of writing itself.
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

I find it fascinating that someone, someday, will be able to make the intuitive leap that results in the decipherment of yet another lost language. The only down side to this is that what they decipher will be mind numbingly boring administrative documents or some king's egotistical claims of greatness. This is especially true when the samples are so rare. The decipherment of the Harrapan script/language will probably be on par with that. None or few of the personal documents will have survived because they were probably written on more ephemeral materials. What a pity. I find the personal, more human element much more interesting.

Ancient texts are valuable because they have been found. We do have to face the reality that most of what was written has been lost to time. Therefore, we need to be thankful for what we have.

Although a nice epic poem would be more entertaining than some guys grain inventory, I'll grant you that!
