Yes, you're right Digit. For this they used to rely on things like tree rings, coral grows, and context. Now there are other radiometric measures which are more costly but effective for correlating C14 dates.
What's interesting about the latest C14 discussion is that the effect will be to makes dates older rather than younger....which will be of little solace to the Archies of the world.

Arch' ass was kicked good by them xtians. He was too loony, even for them. He's been very quiet since. Probably had a remission and is rehabilitating at the mountain resort.
Wonder whether he'll be able to resurrect himself again.
