I'm retired, Cogs....I can do whatever the hell I want whenever I want to.
It's a good feeling.
When does the weather settle down there, Charlie? I'd hate to drive or fly in and have it rain for a week. I've seen your photos of that creek in the rain.

Seriously though, it's hit and miss until summer.
That's why I'm thinking of driving. The airlines are not known for their flexibility.
I guess during the week would be best.[/quote]

Ones things for certain, that fire's not gonna get very hot if it's pouring down rain.

Yeah, maybe shoot for a Saturday departure, and a Sunday evening arrival.
Looks like it's about two, non-rushed, 8 hour driving days. You'd have the luxury of having your own vehicle, and could take some things back with you.
Not sure if they allow handaxes on airlines...

The airlines are quintessential club members.
They know there are no handaxes in north america!

You know what I was thinking, is we could actually reconstruct the furnace, hopefully with some guidance from you, Monk. Maybe do the drilling several hundred yards downstream, as to not contaminate the original stuff, and see if we can make it happen.
If we can get it to work, might be worth filming the process. Hell, it might be worth filming the whole process: drilling the cavity and blowholes with only the raw materials these guys would have had to work with; gathering the ore; gathering the fuel; the refractory and crucible material...kill the ranchers cow and skin it.

O.K., and eat it too!!

Seriously, for the skins, buy a couple of goats, skin them, sew the skins together to create a billow (and of course BBQ and eat them).
Alot of work, but if done successfully, might add quite of bit of credibility to the whole hypothesis.
