Incidentally, "Ph.D.s" in one disciple do not confer understanding of another. They may contribute to the "insolence of office" which blinds one to evidence. Such is the belief that marine biology--or history--is the same as geology and physics.

And besides, since the plates were moving perhaps a hundred feet/minute, they were plunging down deeper under the continental plates, to affect the magnetic field of the earth, the magnetic reversals which are noted in lava rocks, and in sedimentary rocks.
