Since it looks to have been the stepping stone, the jump-off point, to Asia and beyond.
Since it was the gateway to the rest of the world they were probably selling the ancient equivalent of tickets for admission. :shock:

Java Man's ancestors (Pithecanthropus erectus) had already passed Qatar hundreds of thousands of years earlier, en route to Java. That + dwellings = organisation to me.
