A very important part of the book that doesn’t get enough coverage because he wrote it before some of the more dramatic findings.
It is being discovered that far from being a “pristine, untouched by humans, paradise” the whole Amazon watershed was intensely populated and farmed.
If you read the logs of the early explores, they tell of continuous villages along both sides of the river for as far as they traveled upstream.

It's also questionable as to exactly how old the present rain forest is.

It would be real easy to push me over the edge and into a rant on how these discoveries are not publicized because they go against the “conservationist” propaganda.
The 5th Ave “naturalists” that think they know more about how to manage the Earth than the people that live there.
They are still running radio ads about how the Earth is going to run out of oxygen because of the logging in the Amazon reducing all those oxygen producing trees.
