But I think your cynical self-assurance that you're conceptually on top of things is so habitual that you're operating mechnically, like an email filter setting does -- any incoming message that sets your alarm off gets flagged, automatically routed to your junk file (dismissed), and that's the end of it.

I think, on balance, you're disabling your comprehension with that.
