When a web site receives you as a visitor, he also receives a packet of information which tells him the route you took to get there, including referrers. He gets a little money and you get a cookie, or virus, or stuck in one of those nasty things that no matter what you click, another site pops up.
Don't encourage these guys. If you see their website links, don't click them. And if you get an email from a spammer, don't open it. If you do, they can receive an acknowledgement and thereby know you were a valid email address. And that's like finding gold.
