I know none of you would knowingly support a spammer, but did you know in many cases a spammer makes money the very first time you click his link? Many websites will pay referrers, to generate traffic for them, because traffic equals money. Web sites which receive 10,000 hits a day, can charge more for advertising than websites that receive a 1,000. And some of these companies know, the more people who visit, the more may buy their product or service. So, top-referrers can make a lot of money, just by redirecting or providing a link for you to follow to another site. Many spammers will put up a site which just contains links to other sites which pay him for referrals. Of course some do not have to put up a site at all. Just some html code which automatically redirects your click. When a web site receives you as a visitor, he also receives a packet of information which tells him the route you took to get there, including referrers. He gets a little money and you get a cookie, or virus, or stuck in one of those nasty things that no matter what you click, another site pops up.
Don't encourage these guys. If you see their website links, don't click them. And if you get an email from a spammer, don't open it. If you do, they can receive an acknowledgement and thereby know you were a valid email address. And that's like finding gold.
