i have always thought of them as historical texts
its like a diary

went out today
hunted antelope
threw wooden sticks at them but they just bounced off
will have to ask ug to spend more time working on sharp stone for the end to make them stick
saw a rhino
discovered a new thing called running
etc

Interesting thought, but I never heard of cave paintings being interpreted as historical texts (nor bone, nor stones). I tend to think of them as ceremonial (or possibly grafitti).

When it comes to pre-history I don't know if you get to pick and choose. One takes what's there and has to evaluate all of it. Did our ancestor's even have a sense of history or were they like household pets? "Now, I'm sleeping....now, I'm eating.....now, I'm screwing....now, I'm sleeping again," with no concept of future or past?

Marduk, If those aren't historical events......... I may be just a lowly student, but seems clear to me, Cave Painting = history.

this was the only way to record everyday life at the time
the first writing no matter what continent it is found on is always pictographs
what do you think the pictographs evolved from ?

I cant resist, I really have to go but..... if they didn't have a sense of history, then why would they develop art? when your being chased by a buffalo you don't stop to draw a picture, but once you survive, you do just to remember the lesson and pass it on.

I don't believe they were like pets. The must have known past and future. But IMO a cave painting is like an archaeological artifact. Its a snapshot of an event in time at best. It is like finding a photo. But if you could find the whole photo album...now you may be able to see history as told in a progressive way.

Scholars tend to the "magical help with the hunt" theory and there is simply not enough evidence to suggest that it was just recreational art.

HER STORY:

He was in an odd mood when I got to the bar to meet him, I thought it might have been because I was a bit late. He didn't say anything much about it. He seemed silent, distracted and his only eye contact seemed judgmental. I decided maybe I should never wear that dress again. Well, maybe it was the color. Maybe I should never wear this color again either.

The conversation was so slow going so I thought maybe we should go off somewhere more intimate so we could talk more privately. He didn't really seem to agree, but we went off to this quiet, little restaurant and he's STILL acting a bit funny and I'm trying to cheer him up, be witty and tell cute stories, but I start to wonder whether it's me or something else. He doesn't smile much, so I ask him, but he says no. But you know I'm not really sure.

I wonder and then I think about the 5 pounds I gained this past month. I bet he thinks I'm a fat hog now.

Anyway, in the cab back to his house, I say that I love him and he just puts his arm around me, but doesn't squeeze. I don't know what the hell this all means or what I should think because you know he doesn't say it back or do anything.

We finally get back to his place and. I'm wondering if he's going to dump me. So I try to ask him about it but he just switches on the TV. Reluctantly, I say I'm going to go to sleep. Then, after about 10 minutes or so, he joins me and we have sex. But, he still seems really, really distracted, so afterwards I just wanted to leave. I roll over and sniffle a little real quietly. He snores.

I dunno, I just don't know, what he thinks anymore. I mean, do you think he's met someone else?
