Yeah, there are common themes running into the thread in one way or another.
The flood itself, the "warning" the climbing onto a tree or mountain or building a boat and the survivors re-populating the earth. There are web sites that show a comparison of flood myths. It stretches credulity to say that these are localized recollections of separate events.

Am I to understand that, the flood myths climbed out of the ooze, or fell from the heavens, in the tail of some comet? In my opinion, the myths were generated by people in the telling of their local histories. And since most people build their little villages or cities near a good water source there are occassionally going to be floods. As for Egypt, didn't Isis drag some part of Osiris out of the nile to put him back together? maybe not the common gather all the critters story but still. not to mention that in Egypt the flooding of the nile was a welcome event, so their myths would not neccesarily be a gloom and doom sort of story. (again just my opinion).

In addition, there are images in creation myths of dry land arising out of a primordial sea or mother and father figures coming from or related to water. For some cultures, there was no mortal existence prior to the water, for others there is but the connection again seems obvious IMO.

Ok, had to think about this one for a minute, but here goes....
It seems obvious to me that because water is the source of life, (we could not live without it) it would only be natural for the creation myths to relate to water. In my opinion none of this is evidence of a global flood.
By the way, we aren't fighting are we? I really don't want to offend anyone.

Nice table Min. I put both your and Monks links in my favorites to go back and study later. Though I think monks link looks like more fun.

What you may notice in a lot of flood myths the previous culture is destroyed. In a few you will see it is not. And in some they speak of coming from a flood. Others have pointed out before on this board, the the local floods are probably those of smaller scope with the previous culture surviving. The third kind may be from crossing a flood or large body of water. But the majority are the first kind. These tend to be the common origin floods.
