Not even the US military can effectively defend against a sneak attack as you describe. I know of several local cases, however, where armed citizens have stopped perpetrators until police arrived. On the otherhand, the news just broke this afternoon of a local couple wounded in an attempted murder-suicide. But for there is some of US history involved.
Let us not forget that our fully armed founding fathers most often met at a local saloon.
And one of the turning points that made the Revolution popular with the common people was when the British decided to dis-arm the populace.
