And I'm still not sure that the distinction means much in practical terms. There was a documentary not too long ago which demonstrated the evolutionary differences between (early) Erectus and (later) Erectus. Now, those guys made some changes!

I agree with that. I think though, that the documentary that you're speaking of was about the classic Erectus from Africa.
Still not a lot of difference, but evolved slightly different skeletal morphology.

And remember gentlemen that the Chinese, who have have quite a number of Erectus sites, maintain that they have great difficulty distinguishing between late HE and early HSS.

Some do. After all, this is China, and the Communist gov't would love to be the center of all mankind. So there is, indeed, a movement that wants to promote an Out of China theory for the origin of mankind. Most of the PA's are good professional scientists though.

The Russians used to claim that they invented baseball, too.
No one believed them.

But the Chinese have yet to be proved wrong Min, and any case, is it not entirely reasonable that HSS is simply HE after many years of evolution?
Roy.

I don't have a problem with that.

Frankly Min, bearing in mind that I could be completely wrong of course, the Chinese evidense seems to infer that HE is HSS, or if you wish, HSS is developed HE. There appears to be some genetic differences, slight, between Asiatics and Europeans.
Much of this would be answered if we could just lay our hands on some HE DNA, the Holy Grail I would suggest.
Roy.

We can't get early HE DNA but, if you and the Chinese are correct, we should be able to get late HE dna. Should make an interesting comparison with HSS and HN.

Relevant Quotation
The nano-diamonds originated in unimaginably hot, and violent, above ground explosions, right here in the skies of earth. And Nano diamonds being found all over the world just means the violent conditions of heat, and pressure, it takes to form them are not uncommon at all. It doesn’t make the detection of their existence any less significant. It makes it more so. When you hear ancient legends of a fiery rain of stones, or fire coming down from the sky, you are hearing an oral history account of a nano-diamond producing, thermal impact, event. The widespread detection of them confirms those ancient stories as actual history, not mere myth.
Impact science is very poorly understood. A fact readily acknowledged by most competent impact scientists, and grad students. But hotly denied by the freshman class. And by folks who get their science from the discovery channel. This was a very different kind of impact event . It was caused by the impacts, and detonations, of objects different from anything ever studied before. And they produced planetary scaring different from anything ever imagined before. The claim that looking for the markers of a normal impact didn’t turn up evidence of this one. is like saying they tuned their search to detect the tiniest trace of oranges, and they didn’t find any evidence of apples.

I blame all the mistakes in palaeoanthropology in my book on the experts in the field.
Their bitterly fought taxonomic disputes made it difficult (See footnote 12, Chapter 2).
The strange thing is they all ignored all these huge holes in the ground in the midst of Homo's range as he was evolving. They came from massive comet and asteroid impacts never considered as significant by the palaeoanthropologists.
You can't talk of a robust Erectus, as Robotus is used for a Paranthropus.
The best I could put the pieces together was HA>HE>HH in Africa, then migration to coastal areas and elsewhere, following elephantidae, then HH>HS in Asia, and then migration back into Africa.
But I have been wrong before, and reserve the right to be wrong both now and in the future.
That's why there are correction sheets in books.

Ran into a little more grist for your mill, EP --
Hey im Guy from Sri-Lanka who is coming from a family of Yak tribe (great king Ravana IS ALSO FROM OUR TRIB) .
These things you are discussing here are our folk tails. The story is about our lost Hela Asura Empire and our attempt to unify the huge empire around the capital Lanka Pura (today this lanka pura is known as Seegiriya the 8th wonder of the world.)
If you come to Sri-Lanka and go to places where still the old inherit ants live in remote places of the country you may here some unbelievable stories. And one of the Vimana had survived the thought time till 1800's till some stupid British ruler destroyed it in its hideout.
I recon you should contact Dr. Suriya Gunasekara who is scholar who knows many secrets.
