Because they liked them, I'd suppose. They found them in their stomachs when they dissected them.

...or because they were very hungry and had no other choice! Or they ate 'm as medicine for stomach aches. Or for their mineral or chemical content, as diet suppletion (like elephants go to salt licks; also very poisonous, if you eat too much).
Or, or, or. There are many possible explanations. None proven.
It could even simply be contaminated specimens. Or willful deception (Piltdown e.a.).
Neither would be a first.

Tell me, what do you require to accept something as being correct?
Is it something you have read in the press, been told about, developed for yourself? What is it that leads you to accepting something as factual? What is your objection to following well established, tested and demonstrated science?
