The Spanish were very, very thorough.
yes they were. from the book 'the civilization of the maya' by Guy Annequin pg.199-200 (1978):

"the priests were the keepers of scientific knowledge and religion. their task, once again, was as intimately linked to astronomy, as with all other cultural activities, mathematical speculations, time calculations and the calendar, which had true dictatorial powers over Maya life. profoundly original, this calendar reveals a precision even more astounding when we consider that the Maya astronomer-priests believed that the world was a flat disk (not a christian idea after all), and never understood that it revolved around the sun. The vigesimal system usedin their mathematics...enabled them to make complex calculations in the study of celestial phenomena since astronomy ruled and regulated every act of life. For these calculations, they used simple symbols, like a point for one and a bar for 5; moreover, the Maya wereone of the rare people to employ the zero...a thousand years before the Europeans and were thus able to denote a non-entity. They could give positionalvalue to their figures and therefore make complex calculations.

They also knew how to predict eclipses accurately, and drew the movements of venus on tables with a precision stunning modern scientists. ...the Maya astronomers also estimated the venusian synodic year at 584 days; today, we know that it equals precisely 583.92 days, an error of less than one hour per year! These findings are even more astonishing when we realize that the Maya had no optical devices nor time units like the hour or minute...According to Sir Eric Thompson, the Maya calendar was even more exact than the Gregorian one."

well that is a start, i can post more onthe calendar if a discussion evolves here but like i said i have limited resources and new ones would be appreciated.

The mathematical concept of ZERO is very important.

The Greeks and Romans managed to develop advanced civilizations without it but somehow the Maya came up with it. An oddity.
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

but did you notice the bold print sentence and prior to that----they believed the world to be flat, long before catholics did. so you can no longer hold that over the heads of christians.

Belief in a flat earth implies a non maritime civilisation - which indeed the Maya were.

Seafaring nations quickly realise the world cannot be flat ;)

the maya didn't believe the world was flat they clearly say in the Popul Vuh
“They were endowed with intelligence; they saw and instantly they could see far, they succeeded in seeing, they succeeded in knowing all that there is in the world. When they looked, instantly they saw all around them, and they contemplated in turn the arch of heaven and the round face of the earth. The things hidden [in the distance] they saw all, without first having to move; at once they saw the world, and so, too, from where they were, they saw it. Great was their wisdom; their sight reached to the forests.”
the belief that the maya thought the world was flat was mentioned shortly after this passage
"This we shall write now within the law of God and Christianity; we shall bring it to light because now the Popul Vuh as it is called cannot be seen any more, in which was clearly seen the coming from the other side of the sea, and the narration of our obscurity, and our life was clearly seen. The original book, written long ago existed, but its sight is hidden from the searcher and the thinker."
so the belief that the maya thought the world was flat was actually forced on them by the conquistadores who believed it because the pope said so

and the round face of the earth
disks are round also

mayan 0 christians 100
in which was clearly seen the coming from the other side of the sea, and the narration of our obscurity
doesn't prove they didn't believ it was flat or not a disk.

mayans -1 christians 200

oh so the comment about them being high up and being able to see all the way to the forests was because they believed they were on a flat disc eh
so how do you explain the fact that the maya started out in asia
they were a maritime race Arch
thats how they got to south america in the first place
if you'd actually read the Popul Vuh maybe you'd be competant to answer these simple questions eh

what youre claiming is that they were as advanced as the Christians who murdered them in their millions who did believe the earth was flat.
thats the best that you can do

Maya 1000 Murdering christians extremeists - 1000

I noticed it....it's irrelevant. The development of the concept of Zero by a stone age race living in the middle of a friggin jungle for no apparent reason is far more important and interesting.

so is the accusation on christians then.

yes it is which would put their intelligence far beyond the stone age yet incapable of using the minerals of the groundto make simole things like glass, metal and so on.

the book i have been using relies heavily on Eric Thompson and i wonder where the source material came from that he builds his narrative on. this book indicates a lot of knowledge of mayan life even though most materials were burned 500 years ago.

By 1492 everyone knew the earth was not flat. It was common knowledge that it was round. Galileo told them that a few centuries before, and almost got burned at the stake for it....by christians. It's a myth that Columbus discovered that the world was round. It's something they tell little kids....or use to long ago. That part of this thread is irrelevant. If you believe that they thought the earth was round then you're all a buncha dumbasses and need to do a little more research. I'd do it for you but as I said it's irrelevant and I ain't got time for that kinda crap. Zero is, however, important. I wish someone besides me would read 1491. Then we could have a good discussion.

it takes weeks for me to get a copy so it would be awhile for that.
Zero is, however, important
who else had 'zero' as a concept? when did they have it? why did only a few groups come up with the concept even though they all had intelligent minds? why would the concept of 'zero' be so difficult to think of when simple math requires such a number?

there you go, some questions to kick start the discussion for you. i am just asking them to get something interesting going for Frank here.

When did the Arabs "invent" 0, and when did the Europeans get
Arabic numbers? Was it during the late days of theRoman empire?

I still don't understand why the Romans couldn't improve on their own numbering system, with all their philosophers and geometers and knowledge of the Greeks

Neither here nor there, but one day in my class I asked a bright Chinese
student in my English class to do some math for us on the board, using Chinese characters.
It was a relatively simple problem...maybe long division or multiplication by several-digit numbers.
He was able to do it, working furiously for several minutes, and covering most of the board. Very inefficient. Probably the abacus is quicker.

Not sure what this means...maybe different cultures had different goals or uses for their "maths," as the British say. Did any Romans go on record describing the weaknesses of
mcd xxxviii...etc.?
The deeper you go, the higher you fly.
