next, since cognito has raised this point as well about how he/ she is not convinced the faces are african, why can't these stone features just be artists conceptions of their own gods?

do we have any written records from olmec times that cast any light on these heads?

why don't you take the advice and start posting links and sources because i see it throughout this forum whenever you post a reply. you feel you need to be taken at your word whether it is true or not and it isn't only me that has caught you in lies.

I don't think eitherr there wasany offence in Marduk"s statement,there is no reason to be sosensitive .I think there is more racism in calling a negroe a colored person ,or a dwarf a vertically challenged human being .Thereis nothing wrong with words that describe humans except if a word is expressely used to denigrate somebody .As for jokes ,nobody should be offended .After all in Holland the best jokes about jews are being told by jews .We alsohave thishabit in Europ of mocking our neignbours.Lots of jokes go around about us belgians in holland and viceversa .I suppose the same will be true allover the orld,including scandinavia where people from the north mock people from the south of sweden,in the states where hillbillies are mocked,in Canada where newfies are mocked .SHall we just agree we are adults and take a joke as a joke ?

so aside from marduk's original post and only one that includes any reference source to these carved faces, and to tell you the truth, i am not buying the facial features applied to these just yet, what other sources do we have that discuss these stones?

why is it thought that they pre-date the olmecs since no one has answered my question about what ancient documents talk about these carvings beyond modern scholarship?

claiming they are negroid is in fact Racist
it is to say that all negroids look like the olmec heads when in fact they don't
you basically are saying that anyone with a broad nose and wide lips is a negro
thats the only racism present in this thread so far
are you a racist yourself that you didn't think about it and just started labelling things

Put him in a 'helmet' and his facial features are very similar to the large 'negroid' heads.

Mind you, there are people today with large nostrils and lips, dark skin and who also grow beards. And they come from the other side of the world to Africa ...

the problems inherent in the Olmec heads mean that they have been classified as a certain race purely on the strength of their facial features and because just one of them looks more negro to the uninitiated than anyone else. this has been mainly used as a point by pseudoscientists who claim that the Olmecs were from Africa purely on the strength of one statue. The psuedoscientists in that case are racist

about the only person so far who isn't racist is me because truthfully i don't see how anyone who is non racist can see any problems with that particular sentence

my girlfriend is aware features like those are not exclusively negro. she said that on reading your post.

i described her to you as black so you would understand my point.

i'm not one to find racism everywhere, but denigrating certain features is at least insensitive to those who have those features, even those who don't have them in exaggerated form.
