Looks like a hand ax, Pat. Has that familiar pear/ birdhead shape to it.
How thick is that sucker?
How deep is that particular pit the students are working on?
Did you make it out to your site?

That tool is probably a knife ... it's too small to be a hand-axe (yes, size does matter). It is also a relatively thin, actively worked piece. It was found outside the pit on the side of the hill so it cannot be reliably dated -- although the surface lithics appear to be about 20,000 years old at that spot according to Budinger. By the way, Budinger will be using Beryllium 10 dating on the pits soon.

I will "lend" the point to you to look over should you wish. It has been cataloged. The pit they were digging was only about 4-5 feet down. BLM (Bureau of Land Management) recently shut down the three main pits since they were concerned about safety and need "better shoring".
Those pits are about 30 feet deep.

Ah yes, those pits have been through seven magnitude 6.0 earthquakes without mishap (three of those in excess of 7.0). And NOW they're concerned about safety? My BS meter is in the red zone.

So did they lay out the requirements for reopening the pits?
That's a damn shame to see those deeper pits closed. Alot of work went into those.
