Happy thanksgiving to all of you. I agree with Bob and Charlie that Michelle does an excellent job on this forum. I appreciate all she does and I also appreciate her putting up with my BS sometimes. I am thankful for all the friends I have made here and everything I have learned from you all. I wish you all happiness and good luck and whatever you wish from the holiday season. Thanks to you all for helping me through a tough time in my life. Your moral support helped me to get through it all and to not just give up. It's traumatic to lose a job you've had for a long time and you all helped me deal with the depression and the anger and doubt that I went through. Don't take this the wrong way, but, I love you guys!
Frank, I don't understand how Michelle puts up with us without going straight to a padded room and I ditto your sentiments. She provides an island of sanity admidst a sea of stupidity. I'm still trawling through the older threads back on page 6 (working forwards towards the present) and I've noticed a few complaints directed against Min, usually pointlessly defensive broadsides about comical interjections with eccentric smilies. Well I'd just like to say how glad I am that these people seem to have returned from wherever they came.
Being English, American culture sometimes holds a certain exotic mystery for me and somehow Jimmy Durante represents the zenith of that mystery. That is him, isn't it? The Schnozzler? Inka Dinka Doo, and all that?

HL Mencken wrote three volumes on American English, in which he expresses the opinion that Americans are more inventive than the British in the coinage of new terms, based on being in a new place with new politics, new landscape, immigration of various peoples, etc. I wonder if that's really true, though.

I think it probably is true, or at least was. America's so much bigger and we've only recently broken free of the spell of all-pervading BBC recieved pronunciation. I must admit language fascinates me, particularly the way it evolves within subcultures and especially in London with the varied ethnic mix going on which produces gems like 'Blood, I was well mashed, innit. Seen,' meaning 'please understand that I was somewhat incapacitated through the consumption of alcoholic beverages, my friend.' I've heard some equally astonishing twists on American rap CDs (of which I'm a huge fan I must confess). Unfortunately though, I think it's language that has made history such a tricky subject - the assumption that equivalent words in seperate languages (God in Spanish and Nahuatl for example) necessarily mean exactly the same thing as opposed to distinct variations on a theme.
