in reading ost of Reader's article i get the impression that the datingof the sphynx follows the maxim, 'guilty by association' in that since it is near Kahfre's and Khufuf's pyramid, it must be built by one of them as well.
He (Amenhotep II) yoked the horses in Memphis, when he was still young, and stopped at the sanctuary of Haremakhet [i.e. the Sphinx cult centre]. He spent a time there in going round it (in his chariot) looking at the beauty of the sanctuary of Khufu and Khafre, the revered ones
this stele at least provides the clue that even in later ancient egyptian times it was thought to be constructed by the earlier pharaohs. it would be nice to have some conclusive corroborration instead of circumstantial.
Reader does lean to an early construction of the Sphynx though he seeems to disagree with Schoch's research and conclusions, as he cites several phases of construction instead of one with numerous repairs.

I see that Reader is identifying yet another Giza structure, a wall, as being pre-4th dynasty. If he keeps this up he'll have to go to the doghouse with Schoch.

Zahi will revoke his visa.

i read that and wonder if the strong front of egyptology is being undermined by loose threads of evidence?

Nobody can seem to agree on the errossion, even geologists , and as far as I know the following is the only text reference which seems to indicate Khufu finding not building
"Long live ... the King of Upper and Lower Egypt, Khufu, given life ...He found the House of Isis, Mistress of the Pyramid, by the side of the hollow of Hwran (the Sphinx) ... and he built his pyramid beside the temple of this goddess and he built a pyramid for the King's daughter Henutsen beside this temple. The place of Hwran Horemakhet is on the south side of the House of Isis, Mistress of the Pyramid ... He restored the statue, all covered in painting, of the Guardian of the Atmosphere, who guides the winds with his gaze. He replaced the back part of the nemes head-dress which was missing with gilded stone ... The figure of this god, cut in stone, is solid and will last to eternity, keeping its face looking always to the east ..."
As I'm sure has been stated before , you would think construction projects of the magnitude the sphinx and Gp represent ,it is only reasonable to assume they would be well documented or at least have been made reference to somewhere , though none exist that I am aware of . Does anybody know of any ??

BTW, he includes a good site map which shows the quarries that some were wondering about and it also looks to me as if the 2d pyramid and its causeway were built after the sphinx was already there.
You might learn something if you read them yourselves. I have found, to my cost at times, that I really should do my own research and not rely on others.
After all, evidently a lot of people agree with the archaeological research -- I presume. So why just take a geologist's word for it, no matter how good he is?

I think you need to show that the Egyptians generally documents such projects before you start wondering about documentation for specific projects.
Try and find any Roman documentation for how they built their roads, for instance. You could say the same thing about them. There's a poem, I believe, but that's about all.

That's from the Inventory Stela which is dismissed as a forgery by the Egyptology Club....although a brave few point out that it could merely be a copy of an older inscription.
No documentation exists for construction of the pyramids...or, at least, none has been found thusfar.

It's hit or miss with the Romans because of the medium (parchment) on which they wrote.
Sextus Julius Frontinus has left an extensive work on aqueducts. It is not as exciting as Caesar's Commentaries but the Romans were not always exciting people!

Doug,
I posted these links previously in this thread(
HERE, for example, is where I posted the Billington page), to no avail (except for the Hall of Ma'at one - wouldn't want to associate myself with
that spawn of Satan site!

Lord knows the folks at THOM are closed-minded orthodox bible-hating freakazoids or some such.)
Anyway, judging by the responses you got here, apparently you at least have convinced a few folks to actually go have a look-see. Good for you.
BTW, I know I've said it before, but The Antiquity of Man is an excellent site from which to begin
any search for information on the more exotic claims made by today's (and yesterday's) pseudoscientists. It is a gigantic treasure-trove of links to all kinds of information and I recommend to any and all here that they spend a few hours there snooping around.

Somehow I don't think Mikey will give you a link.
