Genesis Veracity wrote:Oh how wrong you are about Atlantis, archy, Plato was talking about 9,000 lunar cycles before Solon's time, when the Ionians were vying with the people of Atlantis (Atlantes, Atlan, Aztlan, Attalan, Avalon, Atlantida, Atland) for dominance in the Mediterranean from circa 2000 B.C. to circa 1500 B.C.
Actually, no.

Plato never mentions anything at all about these "lunar cycles," and the pseudoscientists that claim that this is how the Egyptian lunar calendar operated are just wrong (and they know it, but they count on the fact that you don't know it.)

As for Aztlan, this place, if it ever really existed, post-dates Plato by a thousand years. I doubt any Egyptians were talking about it to Solon.

But you're right about one thing, there were no Athenian kings in the time frame Plato lays out. There was no Athens at the time.

Plato tells us in the introduction to the Critias that the story is fictional anyway, in so many words, that is, and by referring back to his Republic, the Dialogue immediately preceding the Critias (or was it The Timaeus - can't remember and won't look it up -) which he clearly states is fictional.

Harte, but what about that eastern Atlantic naval empire which fought against the fleet of the Greeks, variously known as Atlan, Atland, Atlantes, Attala, Aztlan, Atlantis, Attalan, and Avalon?

Were the ancient Mexicans, Dutch, Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Berbers, and Brits, all wrong about this, and what about Herodotus calling them the Atlantioi, and what of all the submerged megalithic structures in the Gibraltar area, were they all built during the Ice Age, and so, are now underwater?

Hey Marduk, did the Sumerians have a god of time like Chronus?
Chronos father of Zeus and Posedion
Anu father of Enki and Enlil

Ninurta was the God of Saturn as was Chronos

so a bit confused really
but that happens a lot as gods cross to different cultures
like for instance in the original flood myth story Enlil sends the flood and Enki warns the flood hero that it is coming
when it came time for the Hebrews to invent their own fictional god they gave both tasks to YHWH
bit self defeating if you think about it
'I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and creeping thing, and fowl of the air; for it repenteth Me that I have made them. OOh except for that Noah bloke cos he's quite nice really.'
hehe

What, you never heard of Atlanta, Atticus, Antitiem, Atilla, Antigua, Auntie Mame or Antidisestablishmentarianism?

You've left off quite a few "A" words and several "Atl..." and "Ant..." words from your list.

The Greeks left no reference to such a mysterious "eastern Atlantic naval empire."
Genesis Veracity wrote: Were the ancient Mexicans, Dutch, Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Berbers, and Brits, all wrong about this
The Mexicans, Dutch, Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Berbers, and Brits never wrote one single word about any civilization at all from 10,000 BC, nor did they ever write a single word about any mysterious "great naval force" out of the Atlantic, other than the ones we know about (from, for example, their writings.)
Genesis Veracity wrote: ...and what about Herodotus calling them the Atlantioi
I assume here that your talking about Herodotus' claim that in Libya there was a tribe living in the shadows of the "Atlas Mountians" (Libya is where the Greeks postulated the mountain upon which Atlas stands supporting the sky on his Titanic {literally} shoulders.) It is these farmers that Herodotus refers to in this absolutely overused and completely misunderstood reference that is so often used to mislead the uneducated into believing in the existence of some Atlantean civilization.

BTW, Herodotus also, on the same page, claims a tribe that keeps cattle that walk only backward, and another tribe of people that have a language that sounds like the chirping of birds. Why isn't anyone tracing the DNA of cattle back to their backward-walking ancestral stock? It's obviously a conspiracy of the orthodox cattlemen, since Herodotus, who pretty much just wrote down everything any Tom, Dick or Harry told him, couldn't possibly be wrong!
Genesis Veracity wrote: and what of all the submerged megalithic structures in the Gibraltar area, were they all built during the Ice Age, and so, are now underwater?
Got a link?

There's quite a few structures on Malta (NOTE - Not submerged) and elsewhere that can't be dated due to the absence (so far) of any artifactual finds. If any such that are submerged have been found, which I doubt considering the depth and the cost of underwater archaeology, why couldn't these be from the same era? After all, the area is certainly geologically active. Alexandria, for example, is partially submerged. There is such a thing as subduction, which very often occurs where two tectonic plates are doing their slow-motion collision thing.

There has never, ever been anything at all ever, ever found that would indicate any veracity in any of the ideas you smeared across your post which I quoted here. If you wish that there had been such evidence found, I'm with you on that. It would be terribly exciting. Perhaps you should start digging.

Enough on this though. If you want to talk Atlantis, start a thread on it. I'll join you.

Me too. I don't mind discussing this stff one bit. I just wish it would stop invading every other thread.

I never said they are legends from 10000 B.C., Harte, that's your problem, all those "fanciful" tales are from around 2000 B.C., otherwise, as you imply, they probably wouldn't have had ancestral recollections of such from 9,000 years before, but 1,000 years before? Awe yes.

After a possible discussion, it looks like this translates into:

"No, I don't want to start a thread on Atlantis".

Far from it Beagle, let's do talk about Atlantis (Atlantes, Attalan, Avalon, Attala, Aztlan, Atland).

Don't you expect that we'd find Atlantis near the Atlas Mountains?

OK - great - GV start your thread and maybe this one can return to a discussion on Giza.

Oas, you and Beagle said you wanted to start a thread on Atlantis, what happened? I very much hope you two do follow through.

That was your job - you are the Atlantis proponent. Personally I wouldn't start that any more than I would open a thread on leprechauns. But this is your hobby-hourse. Go ahead - open the thread - make your opening statement. We'll be here.....

If you want to talk about it, as it seems you do, start your thread. If not - great - please get on with something worthwhile.

A few posts back, you thought it would be worthwhile for you and/or Beagle to start a thread about Atlantis, what happened?
