Back to the Ice Age, speaking of the weather. I've been surfing around this morning and it appears, from good sources, that there was indeed a land bridge across the Med. during the LGM.

Beags, I would like to see that reference. You're talking Italy-Sicily-North Africa, but I thought there was always a channel between Sicily and North Africa.

There was a show on last night about recent expeditions looking for Atlantis. Naturally, they did not find it but at one point there was an interesting shot of the lowered sea level in the Med. Lots of additional islands exposed and the person in question was looking on the shelf between Turkey and Syria.
Two hours of Josh Bernstein is almost more than I could stand but at least it wasn't Jacobovici.

I started to watch that and my tolerance is even lower I guess. But I was watching Discovery this morning and there was a show on called Ice World. It had a lot of mistakes in it, but then it showed a picture of the land bridge that West mentioned. Then I was off and googling.
I would have put the show in "On the Tube" but it's not coming back on today.

Yeah...Bernstein is a schmuck but at least he is not such an obvious clown as Simcha.
Besides, these are the shows that get produced. As noted in the old line from "Lion in Winter," "There's no point in complaining about the air when there is nothing else to breathe."

Hi Cogs, I'm sorry I haven't got back to you. I'm still busy but the thing to do is google "ice age mediterranean land bridge". Don't actually put that in quotes though. After you've seen what's there - just play with the key words a little.
You have to work your way past the Atlantis websites - because, alas, there is no such thing as Atlantis. That's about the only fairytale you will encounter. There are plenty - although varied.

Small recent earthquakes in the region have caused ground liquefaction - a terrifying phenomenon where the ground literally turns to water beneath your feet. If the same had happened on a much larger scale then the whole city could have been plunged downwards, taking much of the city below sea level. But the earthquake in 373 BC could also have had a second more devastating effect. As well as liquifaction recent earthquakes have caused chunks of coastline to fall into the sea. If this happened on a large scale underwater landslides could cause a large wave, or tsunami. This would race across the Gulf of Corinthe, ricochet off the opposite bank and come charging back again, to crash over the sunken plain and fill in the lagoon

Do you know how to the use the minus sign in google?
Type in your search terms then -Atlantis and google gives you every page that does not have Atlantis in it.
Or as I mentioned somewhere before - use google scholar

You get nothing but the facts - use advanced search to filter out some citation only stuff. Many links require memberships e.g. JSTOR - lots of great stuff but you can't read it unless youre a member or using a library computer. Anyway check it out.

What is the History channel doing putting on a show about the "search for Atlantis"?
Bowing to the market I imagine. Was it any good? - I knew it was on but didn't watch it.

Well...he "came up" with it in the sense that he introduced that archaeologist and the loss of the city well within historical times. I, for one, believe that Plato was telling a story but the image of a nearby city disappearing beneath the sea was a powerful one to add in to the story.
It certainly would have been well known to the bulk of his intended 'audience.'
He also had another Greek diver who found a load of roof tiles on the bottom of the sea. In looks more like a boatload of roof tiles sank but I have to give him credit for exploring alternative theories.
The show was not bad. He's a dork but he's not as bad as you-know-who.
