I hope no one said that to you.
Unfortunately, I've heard that circular reasoning from several pros...I'm not gonna name bash, though. I may need their resources in the future...unless I win the lotto...then...
Translation: They may have had an entire woodwind section but only the bone-based artifacts survive the passage of time.
Min! You crack me up! Not that I'm saying this isn't plausible, but just imagining it...

:P ...now that would be a sight! A bunch of Neanderthals, all dressed up in their finest animal skins and ornate "bling", steppin' out for a night at the symphony!!

Perhaps just a wind quintet, Charlie. These groups were allegedly quite small!
Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.

Right, allegedly...Who knows, though. We only find the remnants.

maybe Neanderthal was specially evolved to make music
a shorter thorax but larger lung capacity is ideal for woodwind
likewise those short muscular arms would be great for percussion instruments
I can only conclude that Homo Sapiens evolved in order to play the trombone and the double base

Interesting, Marduk. Here's a bit I posted earlier in this thread, also concerning Neanderthal anatomy:
...Using three-dimensional images derived from digitized photographs of fossil hand remains, Wesley Niewoehner from the University of New Mexico found the early hominids differed from the Neanderthals in terms of grip strength and ability to resist forces in certain grip positions...Dr Neiwoehner found that the hands of the early hominids were better adapted to tools set in handles which required finer finger movements, while Neanderthal hands were well-suited to objects held in the palm using the thumb as a brace...

I remember the pictures of the site where you work. The erosion looked fairly extensive. I take it that the whole bank is being eroded pretty quickly?
I would say that there is disputed evidence that Neandertal man made bone flutes, not good evidence.
Morley, Iain. 2006. Mousterian musicianship? The case of the Divje
Babe I bone. Oxford Journal of Archaeology 25(4): 317-333.

Summary. The reputed Neanderthal 'flute' from the Slovenian site of
Divje babe I has stimulated much interest and detailed research since
the original publication of its discovery in 1997. In spite of nearly
ten years' worth of analysis and discussion its status as an artefact
has remained ambiguous; nevertheless it is still frequently cited as a
'flute'. This paper examines the literature and research regarding
this object, and finds that much of the ambiguity regarding the
object's status derives from the literature itself. It concludes that
there is no need to invoke hominin agency in explaining the features
of the bone.

This earlier paper by Morley discusses the bone:

Doug
C'mon Doug - it's only disputed in the sense that ALL things Mouseterian are disputed. For years now, any new discovery is automatically met with derision and dispute by certain groups of experts.

We can post opposing evidence for weeks. I'll pass though. In the end, I think there wil be quite a few surprises regarding Neandertal.

Hey Min - I had a real bad connection while I was gone but I've been able to read the posts. This Neandertal conversation has brought on a lot of humor.

No I had not seen it. Funny. But like most TV documentaries, they don't have the look right. But then it wouldn't be as funny.

BTW - they might have to dust off those old multi-regional theory books.
I know - I should contain myself.

Yeah - one side may have declared victory too early.

Yeah - one side may have declared victory too early.
If I had to bet - I'd say both sides are wrong. There might be a story that no one can see.

And I'm not talking about any of that Sitchin silliness.
