I have one year of college....no degree, but I have worked in the field with some of the top people in the archaeological field as far as Caddo Indians go. I have access to resources as a Steward with the THC which make me as informed as I want to be. I could get a job as a field archaeologist, but wihtout a degree the pay wouldn't be that good. Hell, even with a degree a field archaeologist doesn't make much. The big money is there only for PHDs. I'm not sure how big that money is even. It isn't necessary to have a degree to be able to work in archaeology, but it does help with the pay scale. There are many knowledgeable archaeologists who have no degree, but tons of experience. People like me don't do it for the money. We do it because we love it and we think it's important
i can agree with most of what frank is saying here, as for big money, according to Dr. Charles page (archaeologist) there is no big money for any one in the field. in his lectures he stated that oftenhe had topay out of hisown pocket to go on site and that is why most archaeologists hold teaching jobs when they are not exploring.
People like Schoch and Hancock and West make claims which cannot be backed up to the satisfaction of the mainstream and theses are claims which will change everything. Gotta have balls to do that, but you also gotta have lots of good evidence presented in a proffessional manner to back it up. Schoch has done this with the sphinx, even though it isn't widely accepted
to am extent, these people make observations that are valid and do lack the proof to back them up at times but then so does mainstream archaeology. i think at times politics plays a wrong role in defining the discoveries and what should or shouldn't be investigated.
in that sense we probably need mainstream options if for nothing else than to establish proper guidelines to enhance finding the truth and not impede investigation.
case in point: Os and his latest theorizing. we need guidelines to keep such thinking under control so archaeological sites similar to bosnia do not get destroyed and information lost. also tomake sure that artifacts discovered get credited to the proper civilization and time period.
Dr. Schoch can be reached through his website, or for a while, through the "Daily Grail" while he is in Bosnia. As you know
would you be kind enough to re-post those links please.
just a couple remarks--i can agree with frank that experience is just as good if not better than academia and after i graduated from my undergrad college i and basically all of us learned that what we learned in the clasroom didn't always work. experience was the better teacher.
see frank, you post good stuff
my problem has been that i come from a theological perspective which is not accepted generally and that provides a lot of resistance to my observations and conclusions. there is always resitance and rejection of alternative theories especially when it goes against 'the accepted' conclusions even though 'the accepted' conclusions have less evidence supporting them.
i know you know little about me but that is due to my privacy concerns, i have one degree in theology (from one of the best biblical univeristies in canada {evangelical})and two degrees in history and archaeology from universities that may not meet the academic standards of harvard or oxford, etc. i supplement my degrees with lots of reading which goes outside the religious world as the religious world is lacking in extensive research and honest presentation.
i do that for the purpose of returning to working with the religious world and educating them to a point where the have some better knowledge and understanding and can interact better with the secular world. by interact i mean present their beliefs in a way that is not insulting and hold a dialogue better than jean marie did.
anyways back to the pyramid--it is the 28th here in the eastern world, has schoch arrived as promised? since mostof the supporters f this dig have basically disappeared from this site news, pictures and links have been lacking.
what do we know now since the last outbust of Os.?
