Romulus and Remus unhinged!

If recollection serves (meaning I haven't gone to look it up yet) the Romans arose from among the Latin tribes which occupied the area to the south of the Etruscans. Sometime during the early kingship period of Roman history the Etruscans conquered the city and a succession of Etruscan kings ruled until Tarquinius Superbus (Tarquin the Proud) became such an unbearable prick that Marcus Junius Brutus led a revolt against him which resulted in the creation of the Roman Republic.

Tarquinius Superbus was the last Etruscan king (self-appointed) and a terrible despot, almost 200 years after Romulus (self-appointed) was the first Roman king (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarquinius_Superbus).

Romulus and Remus were mythical characters representing the latin
tribes who "originally" lived on the site of Rome. Even though
the Etruscans conquered them, R&R were retained as symbols as of
the locale? Or maybe they were reinstated by MJ Brutus and company..
And did Rome have a previous name that we know of?

I think I need to do more research before I hazard anymore opinions or
guesses about this. This class has too much homework! I must get another hobby. But I am grateful for your attempts to educate me.

BTW, in Rome, Georgia, USA, there is a replica of the famous "R&R and the she-wolf" sculpture in front of the county courthouse.

As I understand it, Romulus and Remus were rebelling (south-)Etruscans, calling themselves Romans, but their kingdom was RE-conquered by the Etruscans for a period of almost 200 years until the despotic Tarquinius Superbus was replaced by the Roman Republic.

Yes, the Romans were here, too! Their descendents live in an isolated
area of the Southeastern US.

If you look under the hobbit thread, you can see that I figured out
how to post a picture, but I selected one that was not part of a

Just a "tit"bit...you probably already know that the two cherubic
babes were added to that shewolf statue during the Renaissance.
I don't know who perpetrated that travesty.
The she-wolf is said by art historians to be "Etruscan."

The Etruscans are said to have built tombs like houses, rectangular, with
lots of decoration --paintings and relief sculpture.
Some of their tombs are round tumuli, but my art history books say they
contain rectangular chambers.

This new grave is said to be from only 1000 bc...surely someone was
living there before that....

Speaking of the term "renaissance," a lot happened in Italy from about
700 to 200 bc...(my dates are spongy) They went from the Archaic
style of sculpture and architecture to an adoption of the more advanced Greek ...classic and hellenestic
styles, and really developed them and spread them all over their empire.\
Not to mention literature and politics....
