If recollection serves (meaning I haven't gone to look it up yet) the Romans arose from among the Latin tribes which occupied the area to the south of the Etruscans. Sometime during the early kingship period of Roman history the Etruscans conquered the city and a succession of Etruscan kings ruled until Tarquinius Superbus (Tarquin the Proud) became such an unbearable prick that Marcus Junius Brutus led a revolt against him which resulted in the creation of the Roman Republic.
