An engineering marvel at the time, today they are instantly recognizable as Compact Discs, a product that turns 25 years old on Friday - and whose future is increasingly in doubt in an age of iPods and digital downloads.

One day archaeologists will dig up vinyl albums and declare them to be "cult objects."

Like 78 rpm records, 8-track cassettes, compact cassettes, 1/4" audio tapes, and soon CD's, DVD's, and Blu-Ray DVD's.
Next stop: solid state memory (BIIIIG 'flash cards', like the one in your digital camera).

It is already happening.
My 24 year old daughter in-law didn't know what my LP's were.
Se reconized some of the sons and group names, but had no idea of how to play a record. "How do these work?'
I told her "Just like a CD but bigger, slower, and with a needle instead of a laser."
She didn't know how a CD worked. She just knew you put it in the slot and sound came out. All the mechinicals are hidden from view. So, she learned two things that day by watching an LP go around.

Me too! Got about 200 originals. Part of my legacy to my heirs. In some 20/30 years time, I reckon. To sell of course. May make 'm a pretty penny by then.

I shitcanned hundreds of LPs when I moved. They were too heavy to bring and I couldn't even give them away.

I sort of identify with D.H. Lawrence on this one. He didn't approve of radio and had "serious reservations" about the gramophone. I've made it so far as CD but it stops there for me.

OTOH, I'll bet that you enthusiastically embrace flush toilets?

That fad's passed here, luckily. These days you need to be seen with at least 3 phones, busily juggling 'm about. Inputting on one, talking on the other – on the speakerphone of course, so that everybody can enjoy your stupid conversation, and listening to radio or MP3 from the third. All simultaneously.
