SYDNEY, Australia - Tools dating back at least 35,000 years have been unearthed in a rock shelter in Australia's remote northwest, making it one of the oldest archaeological finds in that part of the country, archaeologists said Monday.
The tools include a piece of flint the size of a small cell phone and hundreds of tiny sharp stones that were used as knives. One local Aboriginal elder saw it as vindication of what his people have said all along — that they have inhabited this land for tens of thousands of years.

Neat article. Australia is always a great topic. It blows the Out of Africa theory out of the water. Evidence of human occupation in Australia and the Sahul goes back to 60,000 BC.

and it is not hard to imagine anatomically modern humans, just like us in thought and ability, constructing bamboo rafts powered by sails woven from leaves.
I have to disagree with this fellow. The Club seems to have a great deal of difficulty imaging those humans building boats!

I they did, they were useless. Evinrude and Mercury weren't exporting to Oz yet.

Useless or not, they got 'em there, and to the Andaman Islands.

That's not too far off the mark. These types of tools were used to work with animal hides, food processing, plant material (for ropes, etc.) and carving wood. I'll bet those tool kits are older than 35kya. And those people just didn't hit the beach and scoot to the interior immediately!
Does OOA mean Out of Australia?

Hey Min -
I posted on the "Cave 13B" site.
All -
"More on the world-class Australian swimming team..........
http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/ ... 02548.html
Now, given the 35k figure, and inland at that,
It would seem that certain "aboriginals"
Had some major cognitive shit together, say,
At 40k,
Minimum.
This is to say, the techne to build seagoing watercraft and
The hunting/gathering techne to survive on "new ground."
Makes me think that not only was there some pretty sophisticated
Communication, but multigenerational sequential communication at that.
Now multiply this potential by
All coastlines,
All crossings."
And I will add this:
To develop that techne pushes
The creation of watercraft probably
To the 100k line or earlier.
And - Ishtar -
It also pushes a highly developed Shamanic culture
To a similar timeline.
In short,
A watercraft diaspora which delivered
A mature shamanic view to Australia.
Now, trick question,
How did that return and expand to the
Continental mainlands?
Yeeesssss?

Hmm, perhaps by the Europeans rediscovering Australia by........boat....and thus culturally rediscovering shamanism due to contact.
Or were you thinking something older?

All -
That the Australians could voyage
there means that they could also voyage back.
Think about it.
