Mayan Apocalypse - 2012

The Mayan civilisation covered the skinny bit of the Americas between North and South America, reaching from the southern states of Mexico down to western Honduras. Its Classic Period was from 250 to 900 AD, so their best years were behind them by the time of the Spanish invasion.

At their peak, the Mayans had the only mature written language ever found in the Americas, spectacular and densely populated cities, and very sophisticated systems of mathematics, astronomy and calendars.

They were marvelous astronomers, showing what could be done with the naked eye. Their measurements of the lunar month, the period of Venus and the year were more accurate than those of the Ancient Greeks.

Which brings us to the calendar that predicts the end of the world in 2012.
This is from ABC News of all places. Posted in Arch. News.

I have prepared for the apocalypse for years now,
I really don't think that it will ever get here, and I am tired of waiting for it.

news stories like that will not get people ready for anything,
it just worries them, most people are not proactive.

How does a calendar predict anything?
2012 is the next Y2K disaster. Long on hype and short on substance. Great for alarmist book sales though.

How does a calendar predict anything?

In this case, by ending.

I don't put a lot of stock in this. Still....I don't think I'll make New Year's Plans for that year.

Like our calendar which ends on December 31.
Then starts over. I think if any true mayans wer around, that's what they would tell us. "It just starts over."

I think it's alleged to be the end of a great age, so the Mayan equivalent of the last day of the fifth Mexica Sun - ie - definitively the end; except I'm hugely sceptical about where it is claimed that this current great Mayan age (or whatever) is the last one, or even how the 2012 date is arrived at - there's a few other dates you might get depending upon which version of the Mayan leap year equivalent you tend to believe in.

So far as I can tell, it's all bollocks in the name of book sales and so that ARSLHOES (that's an anagram) like Terrance "I am not actually of any use to anyone or anything whatsoever" McKenna don't have to get proper jobs. Though I could be wrong. I suppose.

the date 2012 is an astronomical event.
the myan calender uses many astronomical events for its time scales.
the largest one is the one that will run out, and it marks our solar system lining up with a point in the galactic plane.

some multidimensional physics predicts that this will change the amount of heat in the core of the earth and the sun, and that it might cause big changes in volcanic and solar activity.

it is only in the last few years that people have noticed that the date is the same as the myan calender reseting.

even if this is not a big deal with a disaster, it makes you wonder how they knew what the time scale is for this astronomy event, they were not around when this started ?, they would need telescopes and lots of math to have figured it out like we did.

Are you saying the earth is going to physically pass through the galactic plane in 2012?

Can you post credible some links about this and the multidimensional physics studies? I haven't heard about those studies until now.

Here ya go Monk - but don't think NASA is saying the same thing as what's been said according to this.

It has a link to NASA site too in the post.

AFAIK, A gentleman named John Major Jenkins has been the major source of "information" about the galactic alignment around 2012. To give you a background please peruse the following links:

A nice 28 minute video:
http://www.consciousmedianetwork.com/me ... enkins.htm

And his own website:
http://alignment2012.com/

where he briefly explains the alignment:
http://alignment2012.com/whatisGA.htm

I will comment later after you all have time to get some background. In the meantime, I would be interested to see any info others may have.

It's supposed to be the end of the age or sun or something.

Not sure if anybody would be interested in seeing what the sky (planets and constellations) would look like from earth at a few different spots but if so you could always download this stellarium from http://www.stellarium.org/
Or if you want you could even change the date to just about any point in time - including the Dec.21,2012 date.

Should have said you can set it to show the planets, their names, the constellations and their names and borders, etc. As well as changing the date and viewing from a few different locations on the earth.

not sure this is credible, but it is a newish thing and does not have many people paying attention to it.
this page has a good introduction.
http://www.enterprisemission.com/physics.html

I have played with some devices that I made assuming that it is real and got some very strange results, results that I would have not expected if it were not real, so I tend to believe at least some of it, but it would be lots of work to prove it, and I am not really up for it, not even the basic formulas have not been proven, you need entirely new sensors to play with these things, and it is all build it yourself.

Are you seriously not sure if Richard Hoagland is considered credible?
