I am putting this in our new spot only because there is more water “down South.”
But this shows us there are counter currents in the broad brush surface currents we have been taught about.
This could mean that even with a relatively crude boat, a seaman who was a skilled current reader could go “upstream”.

But as this shows the boats of the Pacific were not all that crude.
