When someone with a scientific background begins chasing after fairy tales, my belief in the stupidity of humankind is reinforced.

Well, actually Cog,
There are a number of people in the science area that do believe in a God.
They seem to be concentrated in the very big or the very small.
Astronomers and Micro biologists.

As far as the Ark is concerned, I have stated before that I am willing to concede that the story of a “world wide” flood may have been “the world as we knew it.”
Or if, in effect, it was world wide, that there may have more than 8 survivors.

But, won’t it be fun if they find something?
I can just imagine the back pedaling and huge probability explanations.

KB, let me explain. As a coincidence, my first degree was in medical microbiology and yes, I do believe in God. However, I am having heartburn over finding a large wooden structure on the slopes of Mt. Ararat. Local flood(s)?: yes. Worldwide inundation?: nope.

Beginning of the world: 4004bc

Date of Noah's flood: Somewhere between 3350bc and 2350bc

I apologize to all those creationists (incl. Arch) who believe that I will be righteously struck by lightning at any minute. But hey, I'm still here! :D

I do think that chronology is a separate problem from the stories.
I certainly do not subscribe to the idea that a “creative day” was 24 hours long.
And I do have major problems with the Genesis based chronology ideas.
Oral histories are notorious for uncertain time lines.
As I have stated in other posts, 1000’s of years after he died the Jews of Jesus day referred to themselves as “sons of Abraham.”
So the term “son of” does not have to mean first generation.
So, I guess I am saying I am open to the stories having some facts behind them, but not necessarily in the time frame assigned to them by people of a much different culture and 1000’s of years later.

Assuming a wooden boat survived a flood thousands of years ago (by alighting on high ground) how could it possibly be detected now? Wouldn't it just rot away to nothingness?
