Mid Wisconsin Mound Sites

This certainly makes sense as a location.
It is very near the town of Portage, WI that was named such because it was just that.
A place to portage from the Great Lakes watershed to the Mississippi watershed.
There is still a canal and set of locks that go from one river to the other but I do not know if they still are in use.
I would expect it to have been a prosperous trading area.
The whole Wisconsin River valley is full of mounds.
Both burial and effigy.
