Extinct beasts could be ‘resurrected’ using DNA

NEANDERTHAL humans, sabre-toothed tigers, giant sloths and the dodo could all qualify for resurrection using preserved DNA, it has been claimed.


A list of 50 “extinct beasts” that might, together with the woolly mammoth, rise again with the help of future technology was compiled by New Scientist magazine.

They included the ice-age Neanderthal, which for a time lived alongside our Homo sapiens ancestors before vanishing around

My ethics are shot on this issue.

I'd give my right arm to see a real live... Mammoth, Mastodon, Wolloy Rhino, Sabretooth, Giant Sloth, Dodo, Great Auk, Thylacine etc etc etc

But it don't seem right, mammoths born by elephants. Something inside me says that can't be a humane outcome for the "red headed stepchild". But then humans have been exploiting animals beyond what is humane for generations.

I want to say, that versus all the horses which men rode on to battlefields to be terrified and maimed, having a Dodo that thinks it's a chicken is a small price to pay. But the whole idea of it still makes me feel weird.

Probably best to think of these as human creations ( i.e., intellectual property) that just so happens to be alive. Without human intervention they would not be "alive" at all.

RE: Ethics.
Along with the drama and excitement of the chase scenes, it was an underlying theme of Jurassic Park. The power to create vs. the power or wisdom to control and deal with the consequences. Ethical concerns for the creatures themselves, and also for the consequences to our fellow human beings and other life forms already existing naturally. Jurassic Park warning in a nutshell: Do this and it might come around to bite you in the *ss.

It's okay to write "ass" (or pretty much anything else) jw.

This board doesn't attract many kids.

(And if it did, most of them could give us lessons in swearing!)

I was umpiring a 9-10 year old little league game some years ago. A runner slid into second just as the throw came in from the outfield. The fielder had to reach for the throw and fell right on the runner. The runner said "oh, fuck! Watch what you're fuckin' doing."

I almost ejected him from the game but figured he'd have to explain to his mother why he got thrown out so I gave him a quiet little lecture on the spot, instead.

So yeah...no one fools kids.

Some years ago I was at a family event put on by an organization we belonged to. Parents and kids, food, music, dancing.

Bit surprised at a group of early teens yelling out to Mony Mony "Get laid! Get fucked!"

Not surprised that they knew the phrase, but that they used it so openly around parents and family.
