I figured if I should ask anywhere, it would be here. I am taking a trip early next week out to the east coast with a couple of friends. We're hitting Gettysburg, Sleepy Hollow, Salem, Boston, Lexington, Concord and Bunker Hill. What I'd like to know if there are any MUST see places in those vicinities or nearby that we should go to. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I haven't been to Sleepy Hollow or Salem but the others are familiar.

Lexington and Concord are both in Minute Man National Park and the Park Service does a pretty good job with the battlefield tours. They are worth taking.

Boston? If you see nothing else get to the USS Constitution. The North End has some interesting places to see and the pizza is quite good.

Bunker Hill was okay....the city has encroached on it too much.

At Gettysburg there are guided or self-guided tours as well. At some point stand at the copse of trees on Seminary Ridge (the aiming point for Pickett's Charge) and gaze back to the west where the Confederate lines were and ask yourself "what were they thinking!" Most of the high points of the battle are preserved, including the Round Tops, Devils Den and Culp's Hill. There are some period homes remaining in the town, itself. I was last there in the early 90's when re-enactors were gathering to begin filming the battle scenes for the movie. A lot of those "Confederates" looked awfully well-fed.

Interested in any kind of history I can see. Archaeology is the bonus.

Min, thanks for the info :) I had thought about standing at Seminary Ridge already. I just watched a special not to long ago on the failure of the charge, so it was fresh in mind.

It's history you want, nite?
In that case you absolutely gotta go have a brewsky and beernuts at the hallowed grounds of Cheers when you're in Boston!
Give my regards to Cliff Clavin and Norm Peterson when you do. I owe 'm one.

Football season is coming up, so you are much more likely to see Norm, George Wendt, at The Linebacker. It's about 1000 miles west of Boston, but if you know anything about him you know what campus it is on.

Perhaps, but George is a Notre Dame grad and frequently comes to home games and occasionally adresses the studeny body as well as speaks at a pep rally every few years or so.
